Globalization—this prevalent phenomenon in education, business, and society comes with challenges, but also great opportunity. At Drake, we view our role in this rapidly changing world to be a place where intercultural perspectives are part of everyday life and students gain skills and understanding necessary for responsible global citizenship.
Drake is committed to internationalization, a process that affects not only our students and faculty, but the communities we touch at home and around the world. Internationalizing the University means:
We work to achieve these goals through a variety of programs and services across campus.
Students, faculty, staff, and the general public can hear from internationally focused speakers and leaders through Principal Center for Global Citizenship, which works to ensure that intercultural perspectives and issues are an integral part of the Drake experience. Students interested in international careers can also enjoy in-depth learning experiences through the R.W. and Mary Nelson Institute for Diplomacy and International Affairs.
Our students can study abroad in more than 70 countries for a few weeks, a semester, or a year. But they’re often doing more than just studying: They’re volunteering, interning, and conducting research.
After graduation, students can teach English in China through the Chinese Cultural Exchange Program. And Drake is also one of the nation’s top producers of Fulbright Scholars among master’s universities.
International Student and Scholar services support the more than 300 international students who attend Drake each year. We strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment for students of all cultures and backgrounds. The Intensive English Program helps non-native speakers of English improve their language proficiency, familiarity with U.S. culture, and academic performance.
