Advertising

Advertising is the exciting marriage of art and commerce—you’ll master both as you combine critical thinking with creativity to deliver strategic messages to targeted audiences. You’ll put into practice a variety of skills that allow you to pursue a career as an advertising copywriter, account executive, researcher, digital producer, media planner, social media strategist—or a role of your own creation that doesn’t yet exist!

Opportunities abound

Our internship coordinator will help you identify opportunities that can jump-start your career. Drake advertising majors have found internships with companies such as The Integer Group, Strategic America, The Meyocks Group, the Minnesota Timberwolves, Olson, Gannett, the American Advertising Federation (AAF), Meredith Corporation, and many more. Current Bulldogs are regularly recognized for excellence with honors that include local and regional AAF awards, AAF student conference contest winners, AAF most promising minority student, competitive Bailey Lauerman and Olson internships, and more.

“I networked my way into the third oldest advertising agency in the world through a professor who connected me with an alumnus who coached me through the agency’s internship process, ultimately landing me the job.”
—Maddy Gildersleeve, senior, School of Journalism and Mass Communication

Committed to your success

Drake advertising alumni are found around the globe at places such as Young & Rubicam, Yahoo, 3M, Condé Nast, the Minnesota Lynx, Allstate Insurance, Walt Disney, Strategic America, VML Qais in Indonesia, Stelter Co., Weber Shandwick, FCB Global, and Meredith Corporation.

Of course, you’ll benefit from the experiences that all Drake Bulldogs enjoy—mentorship from professors at the top of their field; résumé-worthy internships, research experiences, and other professional preparation; opportunities to learn while serving the community; and January Term experiences that immerse you into the fascinating topics—and locations—you choose.

Academic preparation

You’ll select from a menu of classes that support your area of specialization and feature hands-on coursework in writing, visual communications, research, and media. During your senior year, you will collaborate with other students to produce a multimedia campaign for a real-world client—a powerful piece for your professional portfolio.
