PROGRAM OVERVIEW The insurance concentration is open to all undergraduate students. For the most part, with their own extensive training programs, insurance companies do not seek college students with an in-depth insurance education. Rather companies seek bright students who regardless of their major have a basic knowledge of the concepts and efficient uses of insurance and are interested in discussing opportunities for employment in the industry. Unlike the extensive insurance programs at other schools that are limited to business students, Drake’s insurance concentration is open to, and attracts, students from throughout the university regardless of their major. That the program provides adequate preparation for initial employment in the industry is reflected not only in the comments received from students who have accepted jobs in the industry, but also the growing demand for Drake graduates exhibited by companies throughout the industry.
REQUIREMENTS FOR CONCENTRATION Students can earn the concentration by completing three courses with a GPA of 2.0 or above:
INTERNSHIPS & OPPORTUNITIES Internships are available with insurance and reinsurance companies as well as brokers and agencies, involving underwriting, claims, loss control, customer service, marketing, investment, reinsurance and human resources. Internships involving the areas listed above have been offered by some or all of the following at the locations indicated:
CAREER OPTIONS Students with a concentration in insurance should be prepared to enter positions in underwriting, claims, marketing, and risk management. Study of insurance also helps students interested in careers in other insurance company functions such as human resources, management, investments, actuarial science, and accounting.
