“[On the 2016 J-Term to New York City] we saw something like 15 shows in two weeks, including Hamilton. We took a bunch of master classes with different casting directors, agents, and composer Andrew Lippa, and went to equity auditions. It was nerve-wracking at first, but once I got there I was surprised by how much I felt at ease—they wanted me to succeed. It showed me that there is so much I can do as an actor; there are so many opportunities.”

“Between practice, games, class, and studying, I never thought I would get the chance to travel or study abroad. But during the 2015 J-Term, my team and the women’s soccer team traveled to Mexico for a course in globalization. Soccer was the universal language between our team and the locals—afterward, both teams would come together and hug and talk. We would then have class on the Monterrey Tec campus with two Drake international business professors. It was eye opening to see a side of Mexico beyond the vacation destinations.”

“I traveled to India for a J-Term course, which delved into India’s fight for independence in the mid 1940s. Not exactly part of my career path or studies, but that’s the beauty of J-Term (and Drake)—you get to try something different. Through our travels, from Delhi up to the Himalayas, I discovered a more multifaceted country than I expected. I recognize the parallels between India and Drake: Both provide deep opportunities for discovery and offer more experiences than you could ever imagine.”
Drake’s January Term, which takes place for three weeks between the new year and the start of Spring semester, provides an opportunity to explore unique subjects outside your major, travel the country or world, and have the time of your life doing it. You could witness the inauguration of the president of the United States, help the homeless in New York City, teach in Ghana, or restore habitats on the Galapagos Islands.
With offerings both on campus and in a travel seminar format, J-Term enables you to dive into immersive, unique, life-changing experiences. You’ll come away with a new set of knowledge, skills, experiences, and perspectives on the world—factors shown to enhance academic and professional success.
