Drake is committed to assisting students and families from a wide variety of backgrounds as they finance their Drake education.

Drake awards more than $65 million along with 5,000 scholarships and grants to students annually.

A U.S. student is defined as a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or other eligible non-citizen. All other students should select international.

A transfer student is defined as a student with any college/university coursework taken AFTER high school graduation.

The financial aid offered by Drake University is designed to help each family meet Drake's cost of attendance according to their particular eligibility for financial aid programs. This means Drake makes every effort to provide the most complete financial aid package in the first award notice.

Approximately 98% of first-year students receive financial assistance from Drake University. Domestic students entering Drake direct from high school in fall 2008 averaged $21,130 in combined grants, scholarships, need-based loans, and need-based work study.

The Early Estimate for Financial Planning will give you a free estimate of your eligibility for the grants, scholarships, loans and work study employment you may receive for the academic year.

Drake recognizes and rewards student achievement by offering scholarships and awards on the basis of academic merit or talent in fine arts or athletics.  Other awards are based upon financial need. Students may qualify for both merit-based and financial need awards.

  • The maximum assistance awarded to first-year students living on campus during the 2009-2010 academic year is $15,000 per year.
  • Financial assistance is renewable if recipients continue to meet qualifying criteria. However, additional funding is not normally available after the first year of enrollment.

Offsetting Personal Expenses

  •  International students can work on campus and earn approximately $1,000-2,000 per academic year
  • Banks and organizations offer loans to international students who are able to have their loans co-signed by U.S. citizens or permanent residents

In order for entering freshmen to be considered for Drake University’s academic scholarships, which are not based upon financial need, students must take the SAT or the ACT and submit their scores to Drake. No student who has attended a postsecondary institution is eligible for scholarships designated for freshmen.
