Drake University alumnus Mark Nelson, vice president and senior executive producer for CNN Productions, will return to campus on Tuesday, Nov. 10, to talk about documentary filmmaking and the future of long-form journalism.
The Roger and Joyce Lethander Lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in Sheslow Auditorium in Old Main, 2507 University Ave. In his talk, Nelson will address the popularity of documentaries, including his most recent work, CNN's "Latino in America" series.
He also will discuss about the making of a documentary, highlighting the importance of researching, pre-production, writing, rewriting and editing.
While he is on campus, Nelson will also interact with students and faculty. He will work with classes studying media responsibility, public affairs journalism and radio-television production, among other topics.
The four-hour "Latino in America" production examines the growing Latino population in America and provides insight into the 2010 U.S. Census, which shows Latinos as the largest minority in the nation.
Nelson, who graduated from Drake in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in journalism, started his career as senior producer and director at Iowa Public Television.
Now a veteran broadcast producer with nearly 30 years experience, Nelson has worked on several major titles for CNN, including, "Black in America," "In the Footsteps of Bin Laden" and "God's Warriors."
He joined CNN in 2004 and previously served as vice president and executive producer for the National Geographic Channel and as senior broadcast producer for ABC's "Nightline."
The Lethander Lecture is made possible by a gift from Drake alumni Roger and Joyce Lethander.
