SAFETY

You’re at Drake University to pursue your educational, professional and personal goals. That’s why one of Drake’s top priorities is providing a safe environment where you can study, work and play, which is the full-time focus of the Drake Campus Security staff.

Drake Campus Security is one of the largest private campus security forces in the state of Iowa and consists of 20 full-time officers who patrol campus on foot, on bicycles and in vehicles around the clock. A computerized communications/dispatch post is staffed 24 hours a day. Although unarmed, the officers receive training by state-certified law enforcement instructors. The force is supplemented, when necessary, by off-duty Des Moines police officers. Security officers work closely with the Des Moines Police Department. The campus security crime statistics report is available online.

Drake offers these advantages for your safety:

  • 46 security phones with direct lines to the Campus Security office are located inside buildings and in heavily-traveled outside locations across campus. You are immediately connected to Campus Security when you pick up the receiver.
  • Several closed circuit television cameras in key locations in academic classroom buildings and primary student parking lots are monitored by security staff.
  • Front desk receptionists are on duty in every Drake residence hall 24 hours a day. All hall doors are locked at night, and the main doors are locked at 11 p.m. Every person wanting to enter any residence hall after 11 p.m. must present identification.
  • DrakeDirect, a transportation service, is offered each evening and shuttles students to all campus locations as well as those in the immediate neighborhood. The service is free and available to all students.

The U.S. Department of Education has a Web site that allows you to search security statistics for more than 6,000 colleges & universities in the United States.

Drake’s 150-acre campus — within 10 minutes of downtown Des Moines — combines the benefits of a safe and friendly small town campus with the advantages of a capital city.
