Business / Law Degree 3+3

PROGRAM OVERVIEW The Business 3+3 option is a joint degree program combining a bachelor’s degree in the College of Business and Public Administration and a law degree at the Drake Law School in a six-year program. Students in the program apply for admission to the Law School during the junior year of their undergraduate work. Students, who are admitted to the Law School, receive a bachelor’s degree after successfully completing their first year of study at the Law School. Students in this program complete the normal degree requirements for an undergraduate degree in the College of Business and Public Administration including all requirements for the Drake Curriculum.

FACULTY The College of Business and Public Administration has two full-time business law faculty members.

ACADEMIC PREPARATION The 3 + 3 program requires no specific high school courses or experiences.  However, successful often bring experience in critical thinking and communication skills.

DRAKE CURRICULUM The Drake Curriculum, required of all undergraduates, is designed to help students meet personal and professional goals as they acquire fundamental knowledge and abilities in the areas of communication, critical thinking, artistic experience, historical consciousness, information and technology literacy, international and multicultural experiences, scientific and quantitative literacy, and values and ethics.  The flexibility within the Drake Curriculum provides a student with opportunities to take courses that may help prepare that student for the study of law as well as prepare that student for success in the business world or the practice of law.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS During the first three years of the program, CBPA 3+3 students must:

  • Complete all requirements for a major in the College of Business and Public Administration;
  • Complete all Drake Curriculum requirements;
  • Gain admission to the Drake University School of Law.

Applicants are urged to consult their undergraduate advisers concerning the curricular requirements of the undergraduate degree program.

GRADUATE PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS  Applicants for admission to the Law School under the 3+3 option must meet regular admission standards.  Students who have met all requirements specified above, and who gain admission to the Law School, may start law school during their fourth year of enrollment.  Once a student has successfully completed law school courses necessary to fulfill the required 124 hours of coursework for the bachelor’s degree, the bachelor’s degree will be awarded.

If necessary to meet undergraduate degree requirements, the applicant may take a combination of both undergraduate courses and at least two law school courses (totaling a minimum of five credit hours per semester) during the first year of law school.
