Research Interests

My interests are in issues at the interface of environmental science and policy. How do we make use of computer models of complex chemical, biological, and physical systems in the face of uncertainty about the parameters and the models themselves? Can we use this information when we ask questions about the costs and benefits of expected policies? How do nonlinearities and feedbacks affect both the uncertainties and the optimal policy choices predicted by models incorporating them?

Projects and Research

Uncertainty in air quality models
  • Developing a quantitative uncertainty framework for ozone models by which a risk percentile can be assigned to various scenarios.
  • Incorporating questions of reactivity within the above framework.
Socio-Economic conceptual model for the Neuse River Basin.

Personal (i.e. my chance to blather)

In keeping with my environmental interests, I am quite excited about living lightly through intentional communities (though not all ICs live lightly). If you don't know what an intentional community is, you should visit the Intentional Communities Web Site and check out the movement. My favorite IC is the Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage where a lot of my friends live.

I like to pretend that I'm still a chemist, even though I can't remember the Arrhenius equation or what Debye did. However, to convince all of you doubters that I really am a chemist, here is a very nice periodic table, linked up to some server in Kansas. You don't like that one? Well, check this one out! It will make you want to be a chemist, too, especially after flying around their ionization energy map right out of Myst. Anyone with two links to periodic tables on their homepage must be a chemist, don't you think? In case Arrhenius and Debye are now maddeningly on the tip of your brain, but you can't quite remember exactly why, feel free to scratch this mental itch by following these links to the Arrhenius equation and Petrus Josephus Wilhelmus Debye

Smile for the
camera... I participated in my first triathlon this summer. It was a "sprint" (0.5 mi swim, 15 mi bike, 3.2 mi run), but it still took almost an hour and a half. I think it'll be at least a year before I head to Hawaii...My sister and her bo do triathlons all the time, but they're actually pretty good.

Everyone has a personal demon that infects their lives with temptation and rot. Alcohol, cigarettes, the opposite sex...Mine, I am ashamed to admit, is computer games. Too often you'll see me hanging out in the Yahoo advanced chess lounge. My ranking hovers around 2200, which means lots of people can kick my butt, but not you. ;-) (2/00 -- I'm cured of this disease! I haven't played Yahoo Chess in months! Huzzah!...Of course, my rating declined to 1600 before I left, and now anyone can crush me) Worse yet, I play the computer game Warlords (by day I try to save the world; by night, take it over) In fact, I'm playing in the Warlords II World Tournament and am currently ranked as the 5th Greatest Warlord in the World. I go by the fear-inspiring name of "Little Puppy, Slayer of Dragons". Check out the archive page I put together so people can watch the championship rounds. Of course, it makes more sense if you have the game Warlords II. If only I devoted this time to something useful...

I like to paint and doodle. I recently drew some pictures to go with a story I've been telling Kayleigh (my daughter) for a few months now. So as not to forget too many of the names, most come out of Tolkien, so forgive the blatant plagiarism...

The city of Durun
in the Misty Wood. ...fighting alone, the elves never stood a chance against the
orcs with their new allies, the giant bats... Vry'kor's citadel...Good thing Kayleigh's never been to Barcelona... Galadriel
fleeing the orcish attack at Finwe to warn the kingdom

The fierce Red
Dragon (which is really supposed to be the Golden Dragon I am now
 reminded... Galadriel enlisting
the help of the giants ...And so the
dark wizard Melkor wielded high the newly won Dragon Crystal... The immense
White Dragon dwarfed the giant serpents...

Most of all, I like to hang out with my family Frédérique, Kayleigh, and Julianna.
