After our swim, we take the boat to some waiting busses, and start the long drive to Copan. While we have seen many mountainsides along the way with unterraced crops growing on steep, eroding hilsides, this part of the country is particularly damaged from deforestation and cattle grazing. In fact, while much of the landscape is barren and filled with dry-land and desert plants, every once in a while we pass a patch which for one reason or another has been protected from these forces, and it is a shock to realize how lush the area used to be.
