Summer Study

Understanding of both ecological and policy processes is often difficult without direct experience. Therefore, in addition to field work and short trips during the school year, every other summer Drake ENSP offers one or more summer travel seminars. Recently, we have travelled to Guatemala (2002/2004), and Nicaragua (2007).  In 2007, Drake also sponsored trips to China, Uganda, and the Badlands. Summer internships may be arranged to count as college credit, and Drake hosts opportunities for summer field research.

Study Abroad

Study abroad options, including special Drake connections at several schools in Australia and England (for one, see: University of Durham at Stockton), are encouraged for each student to enhance development of a global perspective (usually taken sophomore or junior year). A second language is an asset for all ENSP majors (Drake offers French, German, Japansese, and Spanish). Even with a study abroad experience, Drake ENSP majors can easily complete their degree in four years (sometimes including one summer). You can read some letters from Joe Heffron ('02), who has studied in Thailand, and Lauren Mattern ('07) who worked on urban and slum issues in Nairobi.. ENSP students have recently spent semesters studying in Brazil, Australia, Austria, New Zealand, and Costa Rica.

Internships

Majors have found many internships with organizations such as The Nature Conservancy, Science Center of Iowa, and Iowa Environmental Council, the Iowa Heritage Foundation, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, US Park Service, and 1000 Friends of Iowa, and may conduct individual research projects mentored by Drake faculty.

In the summer of 2006, students participated in a large number of internships. Among them: Crystal Djuren did an SCA internship in West Virginia's Monogahela National Forest. Crystal worked on a fishing derby, wilderness trail work, plant surveys, and even bear tagging! Chase Stahl worked in an ethanol plant running lab tests and industrial-scale steam tube dryers.
