SOME CAREERS IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE & POLICY

(with Drake Bachelor's Degree)

Qualify for graduate school in ecology, conservation biology, botany, forestry, wildlife management, geographic information systems (a.k.a., GIS or computer mapping), global change research. Work in the field with biodiversity themes. 

Laboratory Technician (testing air, water and soil resources for safety, characterizing energy and mineral resources, bioremediation, toxicology)

 Field Technician (outdoor ecological research, environmental monitoring, resource evaluation and management---help with projects as a paid assistant)

Environmental Consultant (help prepare Enviro. Assessments and Enviro. Impact Statements for threatened and endangered species, great opportunities for income and/or having your own business) 

Steward of private nature preserves (live on site and manage resources, take care of property with high natural value) 

Park Ranger/Manager (county, state, national--interact with public visitors who want to explore an area and need help with activities and services)

Interpretive Naturalist (guide, ranger--emphasis is on outdoor teaching activities)

Visitor Center/Museum Specialist (design displays, nature projects, mostly indoors)

Media Specialist/Public Affairs Staffer (get your issues to public audiences)

Environmental Reporter/Film-maker (investigate, document enviro. news stories)

Legislative Aide for science issues (help policy specialists add science to the mix)

Public Administrator (help run a city, county, or state using latest enviro. ideas) 

Land-use Planner (be one of the votes on a public board that manages development such as urban redevelopment, farm conservation, greenspace, bike paths)

Staff member for conservation organizations (e.g., Sierra Club, The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Federation, Environmental Defense Fund--be part of a specific cause at a local, state, national, or international level) 

Qualify for law school and environmental law (Drake is working on 3+3 program) 

Qualify for graduate school in public policy and international affairs (use science as your base and then get a Master's in policy to become highly effective)
