The music education curriculum is designed specifically for musicians who wish to be certified to teach music in the public schools. A degree in music education qualifies the graduate for ensemble/general classroom music teaching, as well as specialization in one of two areas: instrumental/general music or choral/general music. Music education majors combine study in the Department of Music with courses in the School of Education.
Special Opportunities/Career Options
Special learning opportunities available within the music education degree include classes in conducting and keyboard playing as well as methods classes in specific areas of interest. Drake offers students opportunities for extensive classroom observation, videotaped teaching lessons, a senior seminar in music education, and a full semester of student teaching. Completion of this degree qualifies the student for a State of Iowa Teaching Certificate, and the placement rate for graduates of the program has been 100 percent in the last 10 years.
