This
mural adorns one wall of a restaurant in San Cristobal. Note the artist's
bold political commentary on the choices facing the indigenous peasants
of Chiapas. The masked figure on the right represents Subcommandante Marcos,
a leader and spokesperson for the E.Z.L.N., or Zapatistas, who sparked
a rebellion against the Mexican state that began on January 1, 1994 - the
very day that NAFTA went into effect.
