nineteenth century European style building located along the "Bund" in
Shanghai. Shanghai was a "treaty port" in the nineteenth century. Europeans
of various nationalities constructed a foreign enclave in the city to facilitate
international trade with China. Foreign rights in China were often secured
through military coersion.
