Bundles
of wire produced at a large, modern steel factory in Zhangjiagang, a "model
city" located near the mouth of the Yangzi River, South of Shanghai. In
1980, Zhangjiagang was a small fishing village with 10,000 inhabitants.
Today it is a modern, bustling city of over 800,000. The city, modeled
after Singapore, is situated in a special economic zone. It boosts modern
manufacturing facilities, clean and well designed public spaces and rich
neighboring farmland.
