ART HISTORY COURSES FOR SPRING SEMESTER::
Elements of Chinese Painting
In this course we will explore the elements of Chinese painting: the
physical tools and the painted marks and the iconographic forms. Painting
is a visual language and this introductory foray into Chinese art will
familiarize students with the basic language of Chinese painting as well
as introduce them to its self-referential complexities. History
of American Architecture
This course is an introduction to American Architecture through Post-Modernism.
We will focus on major monuments including buildings, land-scapes, urban
plans and unbuilt projects. Our goal is to place these architectural
works in their social, political, economic and religious context in order
to understand architecture as an expression of its time and culture.
This course will also provide an introduction to some of the important
theorists who shaped the course of American architecture and their writings.
Finally, this course will help develop skills of visual analysis and
familiarize you with the terms and concepts which are used in the study
of the built environment.

The Anderson Gallery at Drake University is pleased to announce the first one-person
exhibition of work by Mitchell Squire. A native of Natchez, Mississippi and
having spent his childhood in Chicago, Squire’s work flows from his experiences
as an African American man and integrates personal notions of culture, race,
family, and the cycle of life. Architectural in scale and technique, his work
manifests as volumetric forms that serve as armatures or containers relating
such notions to collections of artifacts. In Still Life w/PEACHES, Squire probes
the subject of bloodline and addresses issues of pedigree, strain and inheritance.
