Heidi Kraus’s area of specialization focuses on the art of eighteenth and nineteenth century France with a strong background in the Italian Renaissance. In her forthcoming dissertation entitled “David, Architecture and the Dichotomy of Art,” Kraus centers her discussion on the significant and metaphorical roles architecture plays in the compositions of the French neoclassical painter, Jacques-Louis David. Recent scholarship includes a forthcoming article entitled “David’s Roman Vedute,” which highlights the influence of Giovanni Battista Piranesi on the architectural drawings created by David during his first Roman period.

Kraus has received numerous academic awards and fellowships – both from the University of Iowa and on a national level – and has presented her work at several professional conferences, including the annual meeting of the American Society for Eighteenth Century Studies. She is also the co-founder and previous Editor-in-chief of Montage, an on-line graduate art history journal sponsored by The University of Iowa School of Art and Art History.
