Protection of intellectual property is currently an extremely hot area. Companies need scientists who can understand the complicated sciences and translate them in a legal framework. These professionals are needed to deal with patents, licensing, collaborative research agreements, and other transfers of intellectual property. They need excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in research teams.

Under the 3+3 program, qualified Drake University students in Arts and Sciences may complete both the undergraduate and J.D. degree requirements by enrolling for three years in the undergraduate program and in the Law School. Students in the program apply for admission to the law school during their junior year. Students who are admitted to the Drake Law School recieve a bachelor's degree after successfully completing their first year of study at the Law School.

Students who have met all requirements above and who gain admission to the Drake University Law School may start Law School during their fourth year of enrollment.
Withdrawal from the program: students may withdraw from the program at any time and complete a typical four year course of undergraduate study for the bachelor's degree.
