Hour exams will cover only unit material, while the final will be comprehensive. Study guides will be
provided to help you focus on the most important information. Exams will be a combination of
multiple choice, fill in the blank, and short answer. My philosophy is to try to write exams with an
appropriate degree of difficulty that would allow all students to receive an A if everyone scores above
90%. No make-ups for any lecture exams missed without prior notification. If you have conflict, it is
important to see me BEFORE the exam date to make arrangements. Because the lab exams are
practicals, they can ONLY be taken at the scheduled times.

Late work is better than no work. However, 5% will be deducted for each day late up to a maximum of
25%.

Term Paper:
An important skill of any scientist is the ability to use the primary literature (i.e., scientific journals) to
extend understanding into specific areas and remain current with the science. Limnology is a broad
discipline, and their are many topics that we can not cover or address only in a fleeting manner. The
purpose of this assignment is to help you develop a critical evaluation approach to the literature and to
examine an issue of interest to youself.

Develop a central topic or question dealing with any aspect of limnology. You may need to explore
some of the journals to get ideas. If you can somehow utilize this assignment to help you make
progress in any current or proposed research you have underway, that is acceptable, and I encourage it.
If you have a problem coming up with an idea, come and talk to me and I'll try to help. The final
product will be a 5-6 page synthesis of your topic. Also at two times during the semester, you will be
required submit a one page summary of papers you have read and plan to use for your term paper.
More information will be provided in a handout.

example topics:

Review of the Zebra Mussel:Friend or Foe?
Chemical and Biological Aspects of Northern Prairie Wetlands
Acid Rain: The Effects and Methods of Reversing the Effects

Field Trips
We will be going off campus to various field sites throughout the semester. The tentative dates for
these trips are on the schedule, and I will provide reminders. You will need to arrange for your own
transportation on these trips -- hopefully by carpooling with others in the class. Maps and directions
will be provided.
