Description:
Flowering heads have about 8 (6-16) conspicuous, yellow, drooping ray-flowers, that surround a greenish cone of immature disc flowers, and a yellow band of mature disc flowers. Leaves are both lobed and lance-shaped, and attach individually. Lobed leaves are up to 23 cm long, occur along most of the stem, and have 3 to 5 lobes; lance-shaped leaves are smaller (up to 6 cm long), and are located below the flowering heads near the tops of stems. Leaf margins are either smooth or have from one to several coarse teeth. Found in wooded areas or woodland edges, where moist, from July into September. Rudbeckia. laciniata differs from the gray-headed cone flower, Ratibida pinnata, in preferring moist and shady soil, rather than open sunny areas. Native to N. A.
