Department Recognitions: Student and
Faculty Awards
2002 English Student Awards
The Ethel R. Taylor Scholarship:
Sara Sherwood and Ruth Schumacher
Sarah Sherwood is a junior, majoring in English and
Secondary Education. She has established a strong record in both
of the areas recognized in by this award, education and poetry.
She has served as a tutor in the Writing Workshop and she was
the recipient of last year's Norma Russell Award for poetry. Sara
is spending spring semester studying in southern France, and will
return to Drake in Fall 2002
Ruth Schumacher is majoring in English and Law, Politics,
and Society. Only a sophomore, she has already established a record
of service on campus, including election to the Student Senate
and serving as a student member of the English Department Search
Committee. Currently, she is the Vice-President for the Panhellenic
Executive Council and volunteering at the Creative Children's
Center, assisting teachers with poetry activities and lessons..
The Norma Russell Award: Angie
Hume
Angela Hume is a Writing and Marketing double major.
Her work has appeared in the past two Periphery collections,
with her poem "Icicles" receiving Honorable Mention
last year. Her poetry is marked by vivid imagery and succinct
observation. One of her nominators described her as "an extremely
promising young poet." Angie is a junior and will be returning
to Drake for her senior year.
The Thomas Dunn English Scholarship:
Jeanette Fitzgerald and Lindsey Zellman
Jeanette is an outstanding student, who thus far has
performed impressively. She is a double degree student, combining
a B.A. in English with a B.S.B. in International Business. Add
into the mix a minor in Spanish, a semester in Spain, and a range
of extracurricular activities, including crew, all while maintaining
a 3.91 GPA. After graduation in 2003, Jeanne is considering attending
law school, with a special interest in international law. Not
bad for a homegrown kid from Des Moines.
A junior English/Writing major, Lindsey has been cited
by a number of her teachers for her written work. Her performance
in the classroom has been outstanding, maintaining a 3.95 GPA.
The Dunn Outstanding Senior Award: Andrea
Deeken
A double-major in English and Environmental Science
and Policy, Andrea has been involved in a variety of activities
at Drake. These include being a four-year member and co-leader
of the Drake Environmental Action League, a member of the Drake
Outdoor Club and Amnesty International, and active in Habitat
for Humanity and the Mobilization of Peace and Justice. In 1998
she won the Drake Award for community service. She has had her
poetry published in Periphery, attends a bi-monthly writing
circle, and is currently participating in an Art/Writing project
("Carbon"), directed by Professor Angela Battle, that
focuses on the relationship between fine art and the literary.
And then there was that term in Ecuador. Andrea hopes to use her
writing to help create environmental justice and awareness.
Humanities Center Emeritus Award in Honor of Barbara
Hodgdon: Melissa Bartecki
Melissa is a junior, with a double major in English
and Elementary Education. In addition to a strong academic record
(3.9 GPA), she also participates in community activities, including
volunteering at the Drake Community Center and tutoring children
in their reading skills. She plans to teach elementary school
for several years, before returning to graduate school to pursue
an M.F.A. in poetry.
Humanities Center Emeritus Award in Honor of Bruce
Campbell:
Aaron Plasek
Aaron is a junior who defies the supposed "two
culture" contrariety between science and arts. He is a triple
major Physics, Astronomy, and English with a minor
in Math. Somewhere in there, he has also found time for band and
chorus. He has devoted himself to writing poetry, and currently
has poems under submission to The Iowa Review and other
journals
2002 English Faculty Honors

Fiction, Poery Workshop, Storytelling as a Social Practice, and
Literacy, Writing, and Schooling. His articles on writing studies

college teaching award; this year it is the University teaching
award - what will he do next year?

teacher of writing fiction and Asian-American literature, Spaudling's
stories and articles have appeared in a variety of journals. Her
