Student Honors and Awards Each year at the Arts &
Sciences Honors Convocation the English Department recognizes
the achievements of students by naming the recipients of its three
endowed awards. We are now seeking nominations for those awards.
Students can be nominated by faculty, by other students, or by
themselves. A student is eligible to receive one department award
in a given year. The final selections will be determined by majority
vote of the English faculty, and in some cases the award can be
split between co-recipients. Granted to a junior major on the basis of demonstrated promise of a superior record of achievement. This award was established by former students of Professor Thomas Dunn, a longtime English faculty member, to recognize his years of service as a teacher and scholar. The Ethel R.
Taylor Scholarship (varies $1500-$2000)
Granted to a sophomore or junior English or Secondary Education/English major with an interest in a career in teaching or creative writing, open to full time students with a 3.0 gpa or better. The scholarship will be applied by the Student Financial Planning office, upon recommendation from the English Department, toward the recipient's tuition & fees. It is not an addtion to aid students may already be receiving. Although the financial need of the student may be taken into consideration as a criteria for selection, financial need shall not be the primary consideration. This award is funded by a bequest from Ethel R. Taylor. The Beth W.
Petersen Scholarship Award ($180)
Granted to a student
of writing, open to majors and non-majors, first-year thru seniors.
This award was established by Webster T. Petersen, a Drake alumnus,
in memory of Beth Walters Petersen. Given in alternate years (e.g.,
2001, 2003, etc. - not in 2004). The scholarship will be applied
by the Student Financial Planning office toward the recipient's
tuition & fees. It is not an addtion to aid students may already
be receiving.
Nomination forms are available in the Howard Hall office (325) and are due to the English Department chair by noon March 1. |
