Description:
THIS INTRODUCTORY GEOGRAPHY COURSE has two fold structure.
First aims at understanding the discipline of geography.
In order to achieve this goal such aspects will be covered that
discuss concepts, themes, and tools of geography.
Second, A regional study of some selected cultural
realms (large regions) of the world will be done. The emphasis
will be on the holistic approach including various aspects of
Physical geography/Human geography/cultural geography
of those selected geographic realms/regions.
Objectives:
- 1. To gain knowledge of Concepts, Themes, spatial characteristics,
and Tools of geography.
- 2. To learn the variations among different realms/regions,
their physical
- environment, cultural characteristics, economic conditions,
and political geographic features.
- 3. To develop an appreciation for a nation's people and physical/cultural
setting.

EXAMINATIONS AND QUIZZES
Examinations :
There will be two one-hour examinations and a final examination.
All examinations will be segmental exams. Final is not a comprehensive
exam. Each exam will be of equal weight. The exams will employ
both of objective types of questions and short essays.
Quizzes:
There will be five quizzes spread throughout the semester.
THESE TESTS WILL BE ON RESPECTIVE REALMS THAT WE WILL BE COVERING
IN THE CLASS.
POLICY ABOUT MAKE-UP
MAKE-UPS ARE LIMITED TO TWO.
If you miss a quiz or an examination and intend to make up
please provide me immediately a 3x5 card for each quiz
or examination giving me the details (i.e.. which quiz or
examination you have missed and reason for missing the test).
Only compelling medical or personal emergencies justify a make-up.
Please do not forget to write your name on the card.
ANY MAKE-UPS will be given on the last day of the class i.e.
on
Thursday May 9th
The make-up quiz or examination will be of different version.
VIDEO TAPES. TEST QUESTIONS FROM FILM :- Occasionally
films or video tapes related with geographic topics will be shown
in the class. Test questions will/may be asked from the information
contained in these films.
Exam Schedule is as follows:
- Exam I-- 5th week of the class -- February 19th
- Exam II --12th week of the class -- April 9th
- Final Exam -- Finals week -- (401) Tuesday May
14th
- 9:30-11:20.
- (402) Tuesday May 14th
- 7:30-9:20.
Grading:
Your grade will be determined as follows:
- 1. Exams, 100 points X3 Total = 300
- 2. Quizzes 20 points X 5 (of 6). Total = 100
- (Lowest quiz will be dropped)
- 3. Class participation and Attendance 50

Your grade will be determined by totaling your 2 exam scores,
your final exam points, your quizzes scores, and class attendance/participation
points
- A letter grade will be assigned as follows:
- A 90% to 100%
- B 80% to 89%
- C 70% to 79%
- D 60% to 69%
- F 59% or less
Class Attendance:
You are expected to attend classes regularly and attendance
may/will often be taken. Based on the experience it has been
found that those students who attend the classes regularly perform
better in the course.
Problems:
If you have any problems during the course of this semester
come in and see me. I encourage you to come early.
