Course Description

This 3-semester hour course is restricted to Elementary Education majors.  It is the first course in the Program of Study for a mathematics endorsement on an elementary education teaching certificate.

It is highly recommended that this course be taken prior to Educ 126 – Teaching of Mathematics.

This course as in all mathematics education courses is explicitly designed for prospective elementary school teachers.  The goals of this program are to help each student to:

*   Become a mathematical problem solver

*   Learn to communicate mathematically

*   Learn to reason mathematically

*   Connect mathematical ideas

*   Learn to value mathematics

*   Become confident in one’s own ability

Math 25 is not a methods course.  The content is focused on that which is taught in the grades K-6 and, therefore, is not new mathematics to the Math 25 students.  The purpose of this course is to present activities and topics in four mathematical representations:

*   Concrete

*   Pictorial

*   Symbolic

*   Verbal

Technology is an important tool in mathematics.  A TI-15 calculator is required as well as a set of concrete manipulatives that are available at the University Bookstore.

Prerequisites for this course are either successful completion of Math 20 – College Algebra or successful completion of an algebra course within the past 12 months.
