Course Description

This 3-semester hour course is restricted to Elementary Education major seeking a mathematics endorsement and to Secondary Mathematics majors.

For elementary education/mathematics endorsement majors it is highly recommended that this course be taken after Math 25 and prior to Educ 126 – Teaching of Mathematics.  Secondary mathematics education majors may take this course at any time prior to the methods courses and student teaching.

Technology is an important tool in mathematics.  This course presents a broad overview of technologies used in Grades K-12 mathematics programs.  These technologies include grade-appropriate calculators such as the TI-15 calculator for the elementary grades, the TI-73 graphing calculator for the upper elementary and middle school grades, and the TI-83+ Silver Edition, TI-89/92 for the high school courses.  In addition to computer programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, Power Point, and web page design, other software is investigated such as Logo, TI-InterActive, Geometry Supposer, Tanks, Factories, etc.

The focus is kept on mathematics and not just on the use of technology by answering three questions for each technology activity:

*  What is the mathematics?

*  What can be accomplished without the technology?

*  How does the technology enhance the mathematical understanding?

These questions remind students of the need to use technology appropriately and not just for the novelty factor.
