The Center for the Humanities supports three Humanities Endowment Professorships. Each award provides three thousand ($3000) dollars per year for a five-year term. The Board of the Center accepts nominations for these positions from faculty in traditional Humanities departments, from declared Humanities faculty or the chairs of their departments. Candidates must have completed at least six years at Drake University and must have been declared members of the Humanities faculty for that time.
Each nomination shall be in the form of a letter that demonstrates how the candidate has established and sustained a balanced record of distinguished scholarship in the Humanities, excellent teaching, and a strong record of service within the college, the university, and the profession that has promoted the ideals of the Humanities.
(Appointment) Procedures
The Board of the Center shall confer the award, according to the following:
- The nominations should be sent to Joseph Lenz, Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
- The Dean will convene an ad hoc committee consisting of the present (or most recent) Humanities Endowment Professor(s), one member of the Fine Arts faculty, one member of the Social Sciences faculty, and two recently tenured Humanities faculty. The Dean shall serve ex officio.
- Screening of the nominations by the committee shall be based upon credentials on file in the office of the dean of each candidate's college or academic unit.
- Additional information from the candidates' departments or his or her dean may be provided upon request of the committee.
- The committee shall make its recommendation(s) to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences who shall then submit the recommendation(s) to the Provost and the President. The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences shall report the action of the committee to the Director of the Center for the Humanities.
- Persons nominated shall not participate in the selection process.
