Scholar-in-Residence Program
[ Deadline: End of first week of classes of prior year. ]

The Center wishes to encourage inviting esteemed scholars in the humanities to visit Drake for residencies of one week to one month in length. Individuals, departments, or interdisciplinary programs requesting funding for a residency should prepare a proposal including (but not necessarily limited to) some of the following responsibilities:

The Resident Scholar will:

  • teach a one-credit course
  • present several public lectures
  • convene a weekly faculty seminar with a common literature
  • serve as a consultant to the University libraries
  • be available as a guest speaker or workshop leader for a limited number of occasions

The Host Individual, Department, or Program will:

  • determine when a residency would be feasible, taking into account Department, Program, College, and University schedules
  • identify a theme or topic for the residency
  • integrate this theme into other available formats (classes, colloguia, individual faculty consultations, etc.)
  • provide adequate academic and social resources for the individual

The Center will:

  • handle all financial arrangements
  • encourage and manage participation in the residency activities throughout the University and especially among faculty in the Humanities.

The cost of the residency should be discussed with the director of the Center prior to negotiation with the individual to be invited. The proposal to the Board should include the stipend for the residency, travel, and per diem expenses, and any additional costs such as seminar materials, publicity and so forth. Applicants are strongly urged to pursue financial collaboration with other programs and centers on campus in order to generate synergy with regard to available resources.
