Adult Literacy Center seeks volunteers

Wednesday, November 26th, 2014

Show your gratitude that you can read. Give the gift of literacy to an adult who cannot. Volunteers tutor one adult for 1 ½ or 2 hours a week at the Adult Literacy Center at Drake University.

Volunteer tutor training will be held Friday, Dec. 5, from 5-8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 6, from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. in Room B13 in the School of Education, 3206 University Ave.

If you cannot make either of those dates, but are interested in tutoring, training sessions are conducted four times a year.

The ALC welcomes all volunteers, no previous training needed. The tutoring training is for any interested Drake students, faculty, staff and community members. Volunteers must commit to tutoring one person for one to two hours per week for at least a year. Tutors must be able to learn independently, work effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds, recognize and adapt to the needs of students, and maintain professional conduct at all times.

The mission of the Adult Literacy Center is to improve literacy, resulting in enhanced self-esteem, daily living, and lifelong learning. Utilizing volunteers and new technologies, the ALC improves the quality of adults' lives by helping them learn to read, write and comprehend.

The Adult Literacy Center has been part of the Drake University School of Education since 1976. Each year, it serves more than 100 adults from a range of ethnicities and mostly lower income brackets. The Center is staffed by volunteers, from Drake University and the greater Des Moines communities, who are dedicated to literacy and community outreach.
