National Honor Society in Sociology

at Drake University Department of Culture and Society

Alpha Kappa Delta is a national honorary society in sociology. The local chapter of A.K.D., the Iowa Beta Chapter, is available to students at Drake. Students need not be sociology majors to join this organization. Students meeting the following requirements are invited to join.

1. Completion of twelve (12) hours of sociology courses,

2. Sociology G.P.A. of at least 3.0,

3. Overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0.

Generally, membership in A.K.D. indicates the beginning of a professional commitment to sociology on the part of the student, and enables members to meet others with similar interests and professional goals. Additionally, members will receive certification of their membership in an honor society (a positive factor when assembling resumes or applying for graduate study) and a one-year subscription to the national society's journal, Sociological Inquiry. Membership applications will be distributed in February.

A $20 membership fee, which covers the cost of their certification and the subscription to the national journal, is required. Personal checks for membership should be made payable to Drake University. Initiation to A.K.D. will be announced at the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Convocation in the Spring.

If you have any questions concerning membership contact Professor Janet Wirth-Cauchon , Department Chair.
