Internships in Sociology and Anthropology: Application
Instructions
The internship provides an opportunity for practical application of theoretical
and research issues in approved work situations with faculty supervision,
guidance, and evaluation. You will have at least two roles as an intern.
First, you are working for an agency or organization that expects you
to carry out certain responsibilities. Second, you are a student who is
expected to complete various assignments throughout the semester.
Application Process
1. Students who wish to enroll in SCSS 198, Internship in Sociology, must
meet the following criteria:
a. be a sociology major,
b. have completed 60 hours of college credit,
c. have completed 15 semester hours of sociology courses,
d. have an overall G.P.A. of 2.75+.
2. Before enrolling in SCSS 198, Students must do the
following:
a. Secure the consent of the faculty member in the Department
for the Study of Culture and Society who will supervise the internship.
b. Locate and secure an internship site. Though students are responsible
for finding their own internships, they should consult with their advisor
and/or supervising professor for suggestions and guidance in selecting
an internship.
c. In collaboration with your supervising professor, develop learning
goals and complete the internship application and learning agreement
form.
d. Complete the "Application and Learning
Agreement Form" (available on the Department Resource Table)
and submit it to the Culture and Society Curriculum Committee requesting
permission for the internship. Approval from the department must take

e. If the internship is approved by the Culture and Society Department,
complete the form (available from the Arts and Science Office) required
to enroll in internship courses.
3. Students are allowed to enroll for one 3-credit internship,
which counts towards the sociology major.
4. SCSS 198 is graded based on the requirements set out in the agreement
form.
Independent Study
Directed independent study and/or research in a problem area selected
by the student and not otherwise provided for in a regularly scheduled
course. Independent Study application forms are
available on the Department Resource table.
1. Students who wish to enroll in Sociology *197, Independent Study,
must meet the following criteria:
a. be a senior or have graduate standing,
b. be a sociology major
c. have completed 18 semester hours of sociology courses,
d. have an overall G.P.A. of 3.0+,
2. Before enrolling in Sociology *197, Students must,
a. secure the consent of the faculty member in the Culture and Society
Department who will supervise the independent study.
b. submit an independent study application form to the Culture and
Society Department Curriculum Committee requesting permission for the
independent study and describing the requirements and evaluation procedures.
c. if the independent study is approved by the Culture and Society
Department, complete the form (available from the Arts and Science Office--a
copy is included in the Appendix) required to enroll in independent
study.
3. Students who wish to enroll in Sociology 197 must complete the form
(available from the Arts and Science Office) required to enroll in "Independent
Study" or "Internship" courses. The form must be signed
by the appropriate faculty member and Culture and Society Department chairperson
prior to registration.
4. A student may not enroll more than twice in Sociology 197 and may
earn not more than a total of 6 semester hours of credit nor less than
3. Enrollment will normally be for 3 semester hours of credit.
5. Letter grades (A, B, C, D, or F) will be given. |
