Course
Description: A study of various stage makeup techniques, though
assigned projects and practical applications. Emphasis will be placed on designing makeup for
an audience proximity of 30 feet (approx.).
Course
Objectives: To familiarize students with fundamental makeup
techniques, equipment, and materials. To introduce students to specialty/
special effect makeup techniques. To attain a basic skill level in makeup application
and color selection for students' future participation in theatre, film, and video
productions.
Please
Note: If
you need course accommodations because of a disability, if you have emergency medical
information to share with me, or if you need special arrangements in case the building
must be evacuated, please make an appointment with me as soon as possible. You may
also contact Drake's Disability Resource Center at 271-3100.
Attendance
and Class Participation:Attendance is MANDATORY. A student will
not master the techniques if, 1.The student is not present for the demonstrations
or 2. the student is not present for the practical application of the makeup. Therefore, only two unexcused absences are allowed. Illness must be documented by the health center. Any
more than the two allowed absences and your grade will be lowered one full grade
per absence and will
continue to lower with
any subsequent absences.
Projects:
Each makeup project
must be accompanied be a completed makeup worksheet. This worksheet is your "plan
of attack" for your makeup design and must be 90 % completed BEFORE you enter
the classroom. No projects will be accepted for grading without this documentation.
(Proper completion of worksheets will be explained in class). Students may elect
to "re-do" ONLY TWO projects for a better grade. No "re-dos"
will be permitted for those projects missed due to unexcused absences. Projects
missed due to excused absences must be made up within the following calendar
week in order to receive credit. Projects not completed within the time frame are
counted as a zero (0).It is your responsibility to schedule a makeup session. You
will be working on your own during a rescheduled makeup session and showing your
workto myself or an assistant to receive credit for the project . Note:If you are
planning an extensive/ time consuming design project it is recommended that you start
working before class is scheduled to begin. All work is expected to be your own original
design, thoughts and execution. If any project (design or accompanying paperwork)
is suspected of not being the student's own work, the student will be notified, and
possibly expelled from the class for the remainder of the term. A failing grade will
be reported to the Registrar for that student.
Project
Grading: Each project will be graded on the following
criteria

sheets, research materials

you are encouraged to photograph you work. On the supply list is a disposable camera
with a flash, Even if you own your own camera, having this one ALWAYS in your
makeup kit, ready with film and flash has proven the best method of documenting your
work.
Supplies: Items
noted with * , are items that are nice to have for the complete makeup kit, but are
not required. Not any ONE kit on the market will have all the items on this list,
but a kit is often a more cost effective place to begin. A RECOMMENDED KIT, IS
THE MEHRON- ALL PRO.
