Message from the Chair

Welcome. I am very pleased to describe some of the distinct features of our department.

Our students have been successful in completing research experiences both on-campus and off-campus, such as obtaining summer fellowships and internships at local, national, and international institutions and corporations. Students with an interest in further education have been accepted to prestigious graduate and medical schools across the nation.

The wide range of diversity in our faculty enables a broad selection of coursework to be offered, thereby building a strong biological foundation for biology students in addition to representing most of biology's many sub-disciplines. Students can choose from several areas of study, including preparation for graduate programs, careers in the health sciences or industry, or other areas in the biological sciences.

We have excellent teaching and research facilities and modern instrumentation, all accessible to biology students wishing to gain hands-on experience. We prepare our students for graduate and professional schools, and their professional lives through excellence in teaching, mentoring and one-on-one research with faculty. Our faculty are recognized for their teaching and research by their peers, including through grants, publications, or awards.

I invite you to learn about us, and to contact me or any other member of the Drake Biology Department faculty or staff if you have questions.

Dr. Maria Bohorquez
Windsor Professor in Science and Biology Department Chair
