Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in theatre.
The theatre program provides students with a solid training in preparation for a career in the professional theatre. Students take classes in movement, voice, singing (both musical theatre and classical), dance (jazz, tap, ballet, modern and musical theatre dance), piano, music theory, and various acting styles.
Students in musical theatre may also have the opportunity to direct, design, stage-manage, choreograph, or serve as a dramaturge depending on area of interest and expertise. Students hone their skills as performers within experimental productions, classroom performance work, main-stage shows and opportunities to work professionally in the Des Moines community. Musical Theatre students also get summer performance work and internships.
The B.A. degree in theatre arts requires a total of 125 credit hours, including a minimum of 50 credit hours in theatre arts. The student is strongly encouraged to include a second academic major. With a second major, the total number of hours required will be determined by that department. If the major or minor requires less than 34 credit hours, additional hours may be applied as general electives.
The following is an example of how the degree requirements typically are fulfilled.
