Welcome to the home page of Drake University's Actuarial Science Program. For information about the actuarial profession head for our links page. What is special about Drake?A relatively small number of schools offer programs in actuarial science. You can click here to see a listing prepared by the actuarial societies. In that list you will find 10 private schools in the Midwest that offer advanced undergraduate programs. Of them, only Drake's program is located in a business school. This offers our students the advantage of being fully prepared for the business world when they graduate. In addition, we have four faculty members with actuarial credentials and on average, we have twice as many students passing actuarial exams per year than our nearest competitor. New actuarial professor hired for Fall 2008We are pleased to announce that Toby White, FSA, CFA will be joining the faculty this fall. Toby is completing a PhD in statistics at the University of Washington. He had several years of work experience prior to returning to school and currently serves the Society of Actuaries as a member of the Fundamentals of Actuarial Practice assessment committee. This brings the number of faculty members involved in actuarial teaching to five and the number with actuarial credentials to four (two FSAs, one ASA, one ASA/ACAS). Successful Drake graduates
Recruiting 2006/2007October 2006 featured the 8th Actuarial Evening, a career fair for our students. Over 30 companies participated. Below are two pictures from the event. The next day over 100 recruiters and students enjoyed a picnic and kickball at Professor Klugman's house. More pictures and information can be found at the DASS web site www.cbpa.drake.edu/dass. The fourth actuarial all-nighter was held in mid October. Students studied through the night preparing for November's actuarial examinations.
Nostalgia
------------------------------ Our program is housed in the College of Business and Public Administration within the Department of Actuarial Science and Statistics. As a result, actuarial science majors earn a B.S. degree in Business Administration with majors in Actuarial Science, Accounting/Actuarial Science, or Actuarial Science/Finance. Drake does not offer a graduate degree in actuarial science. Also, it is common for students to add majors in Information Systems, or Economics, a concentration in Insurance, or a minor in Mathematics. Finally, it is possible for students majoring in Mathematics to use actuarial science courses to partially fulfill the requirements of that major. The department has five faculty members, three with actuarial credentials. There are approximately 180 students majoring in actuarial science with some 25-35 students graduating per year. Many of our students have part-time internships with local companies and many have summer internships at companies around the country. We are fortunate to have a number of scholarships available for our students. As well, financial aid is available through the University's Student Financial Planning Office. Our students have formed the Drake Actuarial Students Society, a campus club open to all students interested in actuarial science. Their home page is www.cbpa.drake.edu/dass. In
March 2008 three Drake graduates became Fellows of the Society of Actuaries at
the Fellowship Admissions Course in Atlanta. Professor Klugman was there
as a facilitator. From left to right: Scott Rushing ('92), Jessica (Tomassi)
Valukas ('00), Professor Klugman, and Elizabeth Jobe ('06). Liz is the
second youngest female ever to earn the FSA designation.
Each year on the Saturday prior to the Drake Relays, student
organizations decorate a square on the "painted street." The 2007 effort by the Drake Actuarial Student Society appears
to the left.
