The Center for Digital Technology and Learning
Drake University

The mission of the Center for Digital Technology and Learning is to acquire, develop, integrate, and examine digital technologies in a scholarly and interdisciplinary fashion. The Center is dedicated to enhancing learning and scholarship by encouraging the Drake community to develop a reflective and fluent engagement with digital technologies.  Using experience gained at Drake and based on results from elsewhere in academia, the Center seeks to fulfill its mission by focusing on student learning outcomes, faculty development and enriching the cultural life of the University.

The Center focuses on students through its coordination of the Interdisciplinary Studies in Information Technology concentration that can be linked to many undergraduate majors. This innovative concentration is an especially valuable pre-professional experience for students whose future work requires fluency with digital technologies. At the forefront of the Center’s mission is strengthening the concentration by encouraging the development of new courses and by working with the libraries and Drake’s colleges and schools to find new ways to deepen students’ understanding of technology, both in their lives and in their future professions.

The Center is committed to nurturing the creative uptake of technologies across the university through its support of faculty and staff development. Believing that many of the best ideas on using technology in teaching, learning and scholarship come from the ground up, the Center looks to faculty currently involved in the creative application and development of digital technologies and seeks ways to support their work. During the past year, the Center has helped faculty jumpstart several scholarly projects including a faculty-student film, the creation of a new course for its concentration, faculty-student research projects, faculty development workshops, and travel to conferences. At the same time the Center partners with the institutional technology offices as well as Drake’s academic units to seek ways to help faculty enrich student learning by bringing digital technologies into their teaching and scholarship

The Center seeks to enrich the cultural life of the University through public events such as seminars, lectures and performances that showcase creative and innovative uses of digital technologies as well as provoke discussion about the influence and proper role of digital technologies in the fabric of our lives.
