Central Mission of the Organization:

To empower women to work effectively for peace and justice in 100 communities and 37 countries around the world.

History of the Organization:

Formed in 1915 to unite women in opposition to World War I and to oppression and exploitation. WILPF stands for equality, peace and disarmament and changing government priorities to meet human needs. The Des Moines branch has been active since the 1960s.

International Issues and Focus:

Focus of local chapter currently on "Challenging Corporate Power," promoting the Voter Owned Iowa Clean Elections Bill (VOICE) for publicly funded elections to stop big money interests from threatening participatory democracy, and educating the public about the global, national and local impact of Water Quality issues as they affect the environment and the political landscape.
