Pharmacy student leadership program highlighted in special issue of national journal

Tuesday, January 14th, 2014

“Impact of a Student Leadership Development Program,” written by Renae Chesnut, associate dean for student affairs and professor of pharmacy practice, and Jennifer Tran-Johnson, assistant dean for student support in the College of Arts and Sciences at Drake University, was one of seven manuscripts selected for the Leadership Issue of the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education (AJPE). This issue, in development for more than two years, represents a diverse collection of information on student leadership development.

Sixty-two proposals from 59 colleges and schools of pharmacy were submitted for consideration. A committee of 17 members from the American Association of College Pharmacy (AACP) reviewed the proposals, which were evaluated based on the manuscript’s abstract and scholarly contribution. In the selection process, the proposals underwent three reviews, with an additional five reviews occurring during the publishing process.

“It is an honor for our leadership program to be highlighted in AJPE’s leadership issue,” says Chesnut. “This publication is a testament to the opportunities that our students have to fulfill the Drake CPHS mission of emphasizing excellence and leadership in professional education, service, and scholarship.”

Chesnut and Tran-Johnson’s article describes a unique student leadership development series that uses a longitudinal, co-curricular approach to emphasize the application of leadership concepts. This series has been available for six years at Drake University, providing student pharmacists the opportunity to participate in multiple leadership experiences and activities as well as earn points that can lead to the award of travel funds to attend conferences or meetings that further enhance their leadership skills.
