Morrow, Fornoff, and Nufer Recognized by Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA)
Koenigsfeld and Stessman Elected to IPA Board

 

Honorary President
IPA's Honorary President is selected on an annual basis to recognize a lengthy and sustained commitment of support for the Iowa Pharmacy Association and the profession of pharmacy in Iowa.  As a part of this award's recognition, the recipient serves a one year term on the IPA Board of Trustees as Honorary President.

2007-2008 Recipient
Richard Morrow, Ph.D.

Des Moines
Rick Morrow joined the faculty at Drake University's College of Pharmacy over 35 years ago.  He has served as Interim Dean three times throughout his career.  Dr. morrow has touched the lives of student pharmacists through his work at Drake University, as well as hundreds of pharmacists across the state and nationally.  He has held several positions as a member of the Iowa Pharmacy Association.  He has been involved in numerous professional groups including Substance Abuse Research Group, Health Care Utilization Taskforce, American Association for Advancement of Science, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and the American Physiologic Society.  Dr. Morrow has served roles in Rho Chi, Sigma Xi, and Kappa Psi and is active in his church.


Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award
The Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award recognizes pharmacists who have demonstrated significant innovations in their respective practices which have resulted in improved patient care.  The award is funded by National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA).  This national practice award annually recognizes a pharmacsits from each state who has demonstrated innovative practice activities which has resulted in improved patient care.

2008 Recipient
Anisa Fornoff, Pharm.D.

Ankeny
Anisa Fornoff is Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Drake University, and has developed a pharmacy practice to address the needs of those with mental or physical disability or disease.  Her services include staff trainings to educate direct care staff on how to properly administer medications, monitor for adverse side effects, utilize CPAP machines, nebulizers, blood glucose meters, and blood pressure machines.  Her services also include providing educational materials at the appropriate health literacy level of patients.  Dr. Fornoff's efforts have resulted in enhanced community recognition of the role of pharmacists in mental health.  She serves on the Independence in Action Committee for Community Options, has been offered a position on the Human Rights Committee for Homestead, and serves as a contact for mental health related questions at the RAINBOW Center.  In addition, her work has broadened the perspective of Drake pharmacy students about the care of those with mental and physical disabilities and has played an important role in developing students with cultural competence.


IPA Karbeling Leadership Award
The Karbeling Leadership Award was developed in tribute to the late Jerry Karbeling for his tireless leadership and dedication to the profession and especially to his passion for student involvement in professional associations as well as the political process.  The Karbeling Leadership Award recognizes a student from each of Iowa's two colleges of pharmacy for their individual leadership and involvement in professional organizations and the political process.

Emily Nufer
Drake University College of Pharmacy
Emily Nufer is pursuing her MBA along with her Doctorate of Pharmacy degree at Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.  She is an active member of APhA-ASP and DRxUGS.  She served as the 2006-2007 Drake University student liaison to the IPA Board of Trustees.  Nufer attended and helped organize health screening for legislators during IPA's 2008 Legislative Day.  She was a participant in the Donal V. Adams Leadership Institute.  She has regularly been on the Dean's List, has been awarded numerous scholarships and has served her fellow classmates as a representative on the Dean's Student Advisory Council


Koenigsfeld and Stessman Elected to Iowa Pharmacy Association Board for 2008-2009

In an electronic ballot, the membership of the Iowa Pharmacy Association elected seven pharmacists to serve as officers and trustees for the 2008-2009 administrative year.  Among the officers elected were Bill Baer, president; Bob Stessman, president-elect; Gary Albers, Region 1 trustee; Carrie Koenigsfeld, Region 3 trustee; Lisa Mascardo, Region 5 trustee; Julie Kuhle, trustee at large; and Chris Donner-Tiernan, trustee at large. New board member biographical information is provided below.

President-Elect
Bob Stessman, R.Ph.

Manning, Iowa
Bob co-owns and operates Manning Pharmacy, Inc. with his wife Lois in Manning, IA. He is the consultant pharmacist for the Manning Family Recovery Center, Manning Regional Healthcare Center, and a member of a consulting team for Manning Plaza Long Term Care Center. Stessman is also the staff pharmacist for Manning Regional Healthcare Center. He assists with pharmacist services for New Hope Village and Quakerdale group homes in Manning. Bob is a graduate of Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Bob served on Drake's National Advisory Board and has been a guest lecturer. Stessman is a member of IPA, APhA, ASHP, NACDS and Southwest Iowa Pharmacists Association. He has served on the Manning Development Foundation, chair of the Planning and Zoning Commission, Rotary, and Past President of the Chamber of Commerce. Bob is a past participant in the Young Pharmacist Leadership Program. He has served the following IPA committees: Young Pharmacists, Legislative, Professional and Public Affairs and several task force meetings. Stessman held positions as chair of the Academy of Pharmacy Practice, and Speaker of the House of Delegates and has served as the IPA treasurer for the past 2 years.

Trustee, Region 3
Carrie Koenigsfeld, Pharm.D.

Johnston, Iowa
Carrie is an Associate Professor with the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Her clinical practice is at Lakeview Internal Medicine in West Des Moines, IA. Dr. Koenigsfeld received her Doctor of Pharmacy from University of Iowa in 1998. She completed an ASHP accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency with emphasis in Community Pharmacy in 1999. She joined the faculty at Drake in 1999. Dr. Koenigsfeld has written several peer-reviewed papers on a variety of topics and actively participates in clinical research. She was selected as the Faculty Preceptor of the Year at Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in 2004. She was also named Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year by the Iowa Pharmacy Association in 2007. She is a national speaker for the American Pharmacist Association Lipid Management and Immunization Certificate Programs. She is currently on the editorial advisory board for the American Pharmacist Association publication Pharmacy Today. She has also served as a referee for The Journal of the American Pharmacist Association. She is an active member of several local and national Pharmacy organizations, including Iowa Pharmacy Association and American Pharmacist Association.
