Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences for P2s

Sterile Training
P2 students will complete at least 8 hours in a sterile product environment. The Sterile Training Early Experience is designed to introduce the student to required technical expertise and professional decision making in the hospital or long-term care pharmacy setting. Course goals include demonstrating skills in competency categories of Communication, Product and Service Management, and Professionalism in order to safely and accurately prepare medications using sterile technique

Patient Care Services
In addition, students in their second professional year will complete at least 8 hours per elective in a patient care service environment. The Patient Care Service Early Experience is designed to introduce students to professional services and practice management. Course goals include demonstrating skills in competency categories of Drug Therapy Problem-Solving, Communication, Product and Service Management, and Professionalism in order to provide excellent patient care through professional services.

Diversity Service Learning
Students will also spend 40-45 hours completing service-learning project in a free clinic environment. By working in healthcare environments available for the under-served community in the Des Moines area students will build skills in drug therapy problem-solving, communications, product and service management, and professionalism.
