Preceptor Development
The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) now requires that new preceptors participate in ongoing education to support their efforts and development as preceptors. To comply with this requirement, Drake has
collaborated with the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and the Iowa Pharmacy Association to create The Collaborative Education Institute (CEI). The focus of this initiative is to provide a forum for delivering the required preceptor training and to provide ongoing educational opportunities for preceptors, students, faculty and practitioners. For more information regarding the CEI initiative, visit the site at www.theceinstitute.org.
The initial core program consists of four modules covering:
- Mission and vision of Drake University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, including a tutorial on the use of our online assessment tool, PEMS
- The Role of the Preceptor
- Giving Experiential Students Constructive Feedback
- Site Development
Additional programs are being developed on an ongoing basis to supplement the core programs. Currently, Drake preceptors can also access the following:
- Developing Cultural Competence
- Developing and Implementing an Early Pharmacy Practice Experience
- When You See it in the News: How to Scientifically Interpret Published Studies - Preceptor and Student Interaction
- A Fine Line: Walking the Tightrope of Appropriate Pain Management
An additional four programs will be released each year to support ongoing preceptor education.
All of these programs are accredited by ACPE for continuing pharmacy education credit and are available free of charge for Drake preceptors. Upon completion, you will have the ability to access and print a CE statement for your records. Future modules are planned addressing a broad base of topics.
To obtain access to these modules, please send an email to our account at exp.pharmacy@drake.edu.
Preceptors may also wish to supplement their development with a program developed by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS). This program focuses on teaching within the community pharmacy setting and can be accessed on the APhA website. Click here for a link to the course information.
