Experiential Education - P3 Students
New curriculum for early pharmacy practice experiences will be gradually implemented as the Class of 2011 progresses through the professional program. This revised program was designed in response to new ACPE accreditation guidelines requiring that early experiential opportunities comprise at least 5% or the total curriculum.
Until the new program is fully implemented, two curriculums will be in place.
For students graduating in 2010 or earlier:
- PHAR 177 IPPE: Longitudinal Patient Care
Students will be expected to demonstrate rudimentary integration of previously learned knowledge and skills in order to evaluate a patient case, develop a pharmaceutical care plan, and monitor that plan for effectiveness. As part of this course, students are asked to identify a patient and follow that patient longitudinally over the course of the semester. Activities include initial patient interview, subsequent evaluation of the case, development of a pharmaceutical care plan, and implementation of that plan. - PHAR 178 IPPE: Practice Management
This course focuses on the skills required to create a practice environment. learning how to allow time for patient care and how to develop a vision for a patient while motivating pharmacists, technicians, and staff to implement it.
For students graduating in 2011 and beyond:
- Patient Care Services
P3 students will complete an additional 8 hours per elective in a patient care service environment. The Patient Care Service Early Experience is designed to introduce students to professional services and practice management. Course goals include demonstrating skills in competency categories of Drug Therapy Problem-Solving, Communication, Product and Service Management, and Professionalism in order to provide excellent patient care through professional services. - Continuity of Care
In addition, students in their third professional year will complete at least 40 hours in a pharmacy practice environment focused on continuity of care. The Continuity of Care Early Experience is designed to introduce students to the medication reconciliation process and other issues related to continuity of care in various pharmacy practice settings including ambulatory, hospital, surgical and others. Course goals include demonstrating skills in competency categories of Drug Therapy Problem-Solving, Communication, Product and Service Management, and Professionalism in order to provide excellent patient care. - Drug Therapy Problem Solving
Students will spend a minimum of 40 hours in a pharmacy practice environment. The course is designed to have students gain experience in the drug therapy problem identification and resolution process in active pharmacy practice settings including ambulatory, hospital, long-term care, quality assurance and others. Course goals include demonstration of skills in competency categories of Drug Therapy Problem-Solving, Communication, Product and Service Management, and Professionalism in order to provide excellent patient care.
