Experiential Education - P4 Students
Students in their final professional year complete 8-5 week advanced practice rotation experiences in a variety of practice settings. These 40 hour/week experiences provide the student with active participation and in-depth learning opportunities focused on the development of clinical and professional skills, as well as developing the confidence and responsibility required for independent and collaborative practice following graduation.
An Advanced Practice Experience (APE) is defined as a structured, college-directed teaching and learning experience whereby the student applies their knowledge of pharmacy to patient care in a practice setting that allows the student to develop and demonstrate the skills required for professional practice. Students must demonstrate a minimum level of proficiency in established competency areas. As part of each rotation, students will be required to complete a variety of assignments, including daily activity logs, intervention forms, PEMS portfolios and other special assignments as directed by their preceptors.
Of the eight rotation blocks assigned, four are required: hospital practice, community practice, ambulatory care and acute care. The remaining four rotation blocks are elective and may be selected from these areas or from other specialty care or non-patient care sites. One of these electives may be completed at an additional ambulatory care site.
Other rotation facts:
- Students may request one vacation block
- Students are required to complete at least one rotation block out of the Des Moines area
- Students are must complete two rotations with faculty
- At least one rotation should occur in a diverse patient care setting
