Student Organizations and College Committees
PROFESSIONAL PHARMACY FRATERNITIES
STUDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT SERIES
Deans Student Advisory Council functions as the College's student government. Elected representatives meet with the dean and associate dean on a regular basis during the academic year to enhance communication between the College's students, faculty, and administration; provide feedback regarding College initiatives, share student needs with the college administration; promote student's professional development; and discuss other matters of general concern to the college's student body.
- DSAC Membership: Each spring semester students from each class shall select two class representative to serve on the council for the next academic year. Pre-pharmacy and P1 student representatives are nominated and selected at the beginning of the fall semester. In addition, the College-elected representative to the University Student Senate shall serve as a member of the council. Drake Pharmacy (Rx) Unified Group of Students (DRxUGS) is the umbrella organization for all the national organizations. This organization, open to all students in the pharmacy program, is a unified organization of all Drake pharmacy student organizations and was established in 2000. Student members are also members of the Iowa Pharmacy Association as well as select membership in one of five national organizations:
- American of Managed Care Pharmacy
American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (ASHP Recognized Student Society)- American Pharmacists Association - Academy of Student Pharmacists
- National Community Pharmacists Association
- Student National Community Pharmacists Association

Health Sciences Student Organization is the umbrella organization for the health sciences students.
PROFESSIONAL PHARMACY FRATERNITIES
Phi Delta Chi is a national professional pharmaceutical fraternity founded at the University of Michigan in 1883. The local (Psi) chapter was authorized at Des Moines University in 1921, transferred to Des Moines College of Pharmacy in 1928 and to Drake in 1939.
Kappa Psi is a national professional pharmaceutical fraternity founded at the New Haven Collegiate and Commercial Institute in 1879. The local (Beta Chi) chapter was installed at the Des Moines College of Pharmacy in 1930 and transferred to Drake in 1939.
Lambda Kappa Sigma is an international professional pharmacy fraternity founded at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1913. The local (Nu) chapter at Drake University was installed on April 24, 1925.
Phi Lambda Sigma is a national pharmacy leadership society for pharmacy students who have displayed leadership qualities and have been recognized for these qualities by their peers. The Drake University chapter of Phi Lambda Sigma was established in 1992.
Rho Chi is a national honor society organized to promote the advancement of pharmaceutical sciences. The society was founded at the University of Michigan in 1922. Alpha Sigma chapter was established at Drake in 1951. Eligible for membership are students who have completed 60% or the equivalent of no fewer than 75 credit hours require for graduation and are in the top 20% of their class academically.
Honor Code Committee is a committee of students and faculty who determine whether academic integrity and/or professionalism violations have occurred and impose penalties for violations. Members are selected according to the policy.
Pharmacy & Health Sciences Day is an annual one-day event planned by pharmacy & health science students. Guest speakers present lectures on various contemporary pharmacy issues. Students have the opportunity each fall to join the committee and serve as a committee chair or member.
College Committees exist for students desiring leadership opportunities and involvement in the daily affairs of the College (see the 2007-2009 CPHS Committees and Task Forces and their charges). Annually during the Spring semester, the Dean requests applications/nominations for students to serve on the College Committees for the following year:
- Assessment Committee: Responsible for reviewing all of the outcomes data that we collect that helps us prove that our curriculum is preparing students for practice. In other words, that we are doing what we say we do.
- Academic Affairs Committee: Reviews new courses for approval, changes in courses, reviews suggestions for changes in the curriculum and forwards those to faculty for approval. This year this committee will be highly involved in reviewing suggestions for changes in the curriculum.
- Student Affairs Committee: This committee deals with issues that impact students. In past years this committee worked on the new Honor Code, developed a new orientation program for P1 students prior to the White Coat Ceremony. They may work with advising, career counseling etc.
- Experiential Review Council: This committee deals with issues that impact IPPE's and senior rotations.
- Admissions Committee: Discusses changes in policy that affect direct from high school admission, the guarantee requirements, re-enrollment issues, and admission of transfer students.
- Diversity Committee: Will work on implementing the new diversity plan for the College. This committee deals with issues related to maintaining an environment for students and faculty that support differences and educating students on cultural competency.
Committee appointments and charges are established at the beginning of the academic year by the dean. Students will be included as members on all committees except for Faculty Affairs Committee. Adjunct or alumni representatives will be included on all standing committees.
Health Sciences Student Organization The purpose of the Health Sciences Student Organization lies in the professional advancement of the students pursuing any of the three tracks within the Health Sciences major and/or students interested in a career in healthcare. Students do not need to be a Health Sciences major in order to be an active member of the organization. Opportunities of the organization include leadership positions, volunteer opportunities, networking, and a possibility of internships.
