University Faculty Development Fund or Travel to Teaching Conferences
Call 3-08
Guidelines for 2008-09
Purposes:
• Support faculty activities in the fulfillment of Drake University’s mission and learning outcomes
• Support faculty activities designed to achieve the goals and objectives of the strategic plan
General criteria for funding projects:
1. Projects must advance the University’s mission and Strategic Plan.
2. Projects should cross departmental and/or college and school boundaries.
3. Projects should promote the professional development of faculty and staff.
Award Amounts
The maximum award per project is $5,000. The normal award for travel to a conference is $1200.
Examples
Examples of activities that will be considered for funding include, but are not limited to: workshop and conference attendance, summer workshops on campus for Drake faculty and staff, group work to design new interdisciplinary programs, ongoing curricular activities and discussions across departments and colleges, discussions and work to redesign administrative arrangements that bring two or more formerly separate groups together, groups exploring new programs, new faculty mentoring activities, creating centers, and many others.
Attendance at general teaching and learning conferences may be funded with the request that ideas from the conference be shared at future faculty workshops. *
Funds may be requested for supplies, software, travel, student assistants, group meeting related expenses, and stipends during the summer for individuals who are not working on 12-month contracts. Normal stipends are $125 for a full-day workshop and $75 for a half-day workshop. Other expenses may be covered but a thorough rationale must be presented for each item. The University Faculty Development program will not support computer equipment purchases. Note that all expenses authorized under this fund should be incurred by April 1, 2009, except in the case of conference attendance or workshops planned for April/May 2009.
Elements of Proposals:
A suggested outline for proposals follows. Not all projects will neatly fit the outline. Revise this outline, if that is the case. You are, however, expected to provide a thorough explanation of the proposed project.

Send your proposal as an electronic attachment with any supporting materials to Associate Provost John M. Burney at john.burney@drake.edu. We will begin consideration of the first round of proposals on April 10. If funds remain, there will be a second call for proposals early in the fall semester.
