When registering for J-Term travel seminars, all students will initially be placed on a waiting list.  Once eligibility requirements have been checked, students will be informed that they can formally add the class. 


COUN 145: Understanding Diverse Populations: Hawaii.
Matt Bruinekool and Wade Leuwerke

The course will introduce students to the Clubhouse Model for individuals with mental illnesses. They will learn about the clubhouse, how it functions, and the standards that each clubhouse must follow. They will then spend time working in a clubhouse in Des Moines, learning about working with people with mental illness in Iowa and learn about how the clubhouse here is meeting all of the international standards. The class then will travel to Kapaa, Hawaii (on Kauai). First they will learn about the Hawaiian culture, and then they will spend a week at the clubhouse there working with individuals with disabilities. They will learn how mental illness is viewed within the Hawaiian culture and how the clubhouse there meets the same international standards as the clubhouse in Des Moines. This course is cross-listed with COUN 245 (crn 1579), which is a graduate-only course. However, the COUN 145 version of the class is open to advanced undergraduates.

EDUC199: Cuba: Stewardship and Socialism

Cuba sits only 90 miles off the coast of Florida, but for the last half of the 20th century, seemed as far away as Moscow. Students will examine Cuba through the lens of Stewardship—a concept that refers to an ethic of responsibility that can be applied to the environment, nature, economics, health, property, and social well-being. Students will investigate how Cubans have exercised stewardship over the distribution and access of public and private goods and resources, both material and socio-emotional. These will include the natural environment (flora and fauna), education, means of economic opportunity (agricultural, local economies), healthcare, and flourishing/well-being. Pre-trip readings will also include US-based conceptions as well as the students' own conceptions and applications of stewardship and the role it plays in individual and national identity. The course design is intended to enhance students’ global perspectives by exploring the impact of revolution and socialism on Cuba’s people and their active stewardship. Students will learn about Cuba’s history and role of U.S.-Cuba relations in the Cold War prior to the trip, but the focus will be on the lived lives of Cubans. Students will move away from traditional geo-political histories and instead read social histories and our itinerary will emphasize ‘real’ Cuban lives instead of the political and economic systems under which they live (notwithstanding their clear influence). 
Course content will be of particular interest for students interested in art, anthropology, education, cultural studies, economics, globalization, history, international studies, international business, politics, psychology, sociology.

EDUC 199/299: Perspectives on Education From Finland.

The course is designed to facilitate Drake’s goal of educating its students as global citizens who are prepared to operate in a global economy. It will take students from Drake to Finland, that is in many ways distinctly different culturally, politically, ethnically, and economically from the U.S. It will take students into classrooms of the most highly regarded country related to student achievement in the world. Students will be immersed in the structure, classroom pedagogy, and standardized testing in Finland. To accomplish these outcomes, visits to elementary, middle, and high schools will be set up as well as meetings with students, teachers, and school leaders. Special attention will be directed towards critically analyzing the practices and policies that could benefit the American system of public education. As students study these issues, they will also learn of cultural and world view differences that exist in Finland.

ENSP 111/HONR 111: International Environmental Seminar: Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.

The course examines issues of sustainable development and interactions between tourism, the natural environment, and economic development. Students have the opportunity to speak with individuals from numerous backgrounds in country, and to gain an appreciation for the issues that is very difficult to convey in the classroom. There is also a service learning component that includes habitat restoration in an area that Drake has been working in since 2013, and it is very interesting to return and be able to show the effects of our work. Finally, students learn a lot about Ecuadorian politics and culture in their homestays.

HSCI 147: International Health Topics: India

This special topics course combines international internship and service learning experiences with pre and post readings, discussions, and reflections in order to maximize student learning, increase student awareness of cultural issues, and increase personal growth related to working in a developing country.  Student will build skills in life-long learning, values and ethics, critical thinking, communication and collaboration. INTD 076/LEAD 112: Exploring Urban Poverty in New York and Des Moines:

This is an engaged citizen and experiential learning course. It will bring together students from a variety of disciplines to explore ways in which to further understand issues of urban poverty and social action in Des Moines and New York City. The class will address definitions, core theories, principles, and practices of social change, servant leadership and urban poverty. The community is our classroom and textbook. We will spend many hours in and outside of classroom hours in reflective observation and active participation in the Greater Des Moines Area and one week exploring urban poverty in New York City. The culminating project will allow students to practice servant leadership through the implementation of their own service-learning experience with a local Des Moines community partner.

LEAD 110: Leadership at Sea: Bahamas.

Leadership At Sea is a blend of classroom and experiential learning focusing on leadership development, team building, and seamanship. The course features sailing in the Bahamas aboard the schooner Liberty Clipper. The goal of the course is to elevate one’s ability to navigate new environments (Nassau and a tall ship), learn new languages (culture language of Nassau and sailing terminology) and to work successfully in teams, follow and lead. We will discover and apply the Situational Leadership model to our time at sea and develop a language of leadership for effective communication aboard ship. We will spend one week on-campus followed by six days in Nassau. Our time in Nassau will include meeting with officials at the American Embassy and the Bahamian Government, meeting the first officers and tour a Norwegian Cruise Line ship, completing an historical tour of Nassau and attending a session with student leaders at the College of the Bahamas We will also participate in the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure and Marathon Bahamas (run or staff water stations). We will then set sail for a week exploring the Bahamas Out Islands. The Liberty Clipper, a U.S. Coast Guard licensed 125’ gaff-rigged schooner, will serve as our leadership laboratory enabling students to rotate through ship positions while taking more ownership of all sailing-related tasks. LIBR 066: Destination Thailand: Research, Exploration and Reflection

This course is an exploration of contemporary Thailand and Thai culture. Students will first spend a few days on campus and researching various topics related to Thailand, including its history, culture, politics, pop culture and current events, with a focus on the Chiang Mai area and the places we will visit. We will then travel to Chiang Mai, Thailand to experience a wide variety of activities, both academic and cultural. Students will conclude the course on campus by reflecting and comparing their initial research about Thailand with their experiences there.

POLS119: Inside Washington: The Presidential Inaugaration.

Be there as the 45th President of the United States takes the Oath of Office!
Following four days of online classwork, students will spend 2 weeks in Washington, D.C. for an intensive hands-on experience.
What can a new president expect and how do our current political dynamics shape the real and perceived successes and failures of the president? How does the modern presidency reflect public understandings of government and policy? As citizens, what should we expect?
During our time in Washington, we will combine a series of academic sessions with The Washington Center, site visits, small group sessions, and an impressive array of guest speakers – including current and former elected officials, party leaders, media personalities, and prominent interest group representatives from all ideological perspectives. You’ll network with Drake alumni, participate in VIP tours of government buildings, and have a chance to meet and question people who make the decisions that affect our national policy.

Religion and Politics in Egypt:
Religion has been always a dominant force in Egypt. Religious influence was pervasive affecting almost every aspect of life. Egyptian religion developed from simple polytheism to philosophic monotheism. Then came the era of the Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam; three religions with deep roots alongside the banks of the Nile. How did religion shape the politics and society of Egypt from the dawn of civilization to the present day? This seminar is designed with keen attention to details to enable every participant regardless of her background, field of study, and expertise to learn in a fun and collaborative atmosphere. During the trip, participants will dive in the accumulated wealth of art and architecture, religions and civilizations, food and cuisine of thousands of years.

THEA 076: Introduction to Theatre

"As with any art form, knowledge of the processes and efforts that go into the creation of theatre enhances the intellectual and emotional enjoyment derived from both its creation and its patronage. This J-Term we will dive in and attempt to understand this most vibrant of art forms: the theatre. We will examine the social, aesthetic and political purposes of the theatre, as well as the various forms in which theatre manifests itself in different cultures and at different times. We will use our time in London to visit different theatres and get back stage tours of the production facilities to see world-class theatres in operation. We will then attend plays and musicals at these theatres to see how their efforts are translated into an actual theatrical production. Also, through a series of exercises and projects in conjunction with working theatre professionals we will gain an understanding and appreciation of the processes and components that make up a Traditional Western theatrical production. In other words, answering the question: “How do we take a play from the page to the stage?””
