Appendix M:
Drake University Academic Honor Code
I recognize the importance of an education institution which embodies the highest standards of academic excellence, personal integrity and personal responsibility. As a member of the Drake University community I pledge to uphold these ideals. I also commit myself to the following statements:
- I will hold myself to the highest academic standards of Drake University: As a student of Drake University I am part of a community which requires all members to continue to strive for academic excellence, responsibility and integrity.
- I will not plagiarize: I shall not take another person’s work, in whole or in part, and claim it as my own. I understand that any time I take information from another source, including but not limited to literary works, broadcast programs, and electronic sites, I must use citation and references to indicate that source. I agree that using another person’s ideas as my own is also plagiarism.
- I will not fabricate: I shall not create facts, sources, or information that are false and then present it as accurate, precise, or true.
- I will not cheat: I will not use unlawful sources to complete examinations, closed-book papers or similar assignments. I understand that I am cheating if I knowingly or willingly assist another individual in such activities.
- I will respect the syllabus for each class: I understand that each instructor has individual expectations and rules of conduct for their classes. I recognize that I must obey those rules and extend professional courtesy to my instructor. I also understand that I have the right to appeal if I feel that a syllabus violates the Drake University Code of Conduct.
- I will respect the Academic Integrity Appeal process: I understand that each College and School of Drake University has a process to prosecute those charged with violations of breaches of academic integrity. I understand that if I am charged I maintain my rights as a student, as detailed by the Student Handbook, including a right to a proper defense. I am aware of the penalties for conviction on such a charge, and that if the violation is sever or repetitive I may be expelled from my college and Drake University.
