Teaching Writing through Blogs and Wikis (EDDL 286)
2 Semester Hours of Graduate Credit
Course Overview
Technology has transformed our society (Anderson & Lee, 1995; Friedman, 2005). In particular much of the information created in the world today is never printed, but only appears in electronic form (Warrlick, 2004). We must understand how this transformation affects our classroom and how we teach students to write. The International Reading Association 2001 position statement, states that students have a right to teachers who are skilled in the effective use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for teaching and learning. However, with the rapid pace of change in technology and in creating demands placed on teachers it is difficult to know which technologies are appropriate and how to use them effectively. One of the fastest growing aspects of the Internet is Web 2.0 applications, which include blogs and wikis (Rainie, 2005). Students are embracing this technology in record numbers (Lenhart, 2007) and educators are seeing its benefits too (Ray, 2006). This course focuses on research-based suggestions for integrated blogs and wikis to help your students improve their writing skills as well as promote their technology literacy skills. You will review award-winning classroom projects and design technology enhanced learning opportunities for your students.
