Drug Disposal
Improper disposal of pharmaceuticals is a major threat to the environment. The drugs can kill or poison animals and plants, and can be bioamplifed (meaning the chemicals are passed through the food chain and affect a much larger area than their original location). Drugs are entering the waterways and water plants are not equipped to remove the drugs from drinking water. The FDA and EPA have recently issued guidelines regarding the disposal of prescription drugs.
