Radon
Radon is a radioactive, colorless, odorless gas that occurs naturally across much of the US. The gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer and Iowa has the highest naturally occurring radon levels worldwide. The gas tends to seep through the ground into homes, where it collects in the basement. Everyone should test for radon. Testing kits are available from the Polk County Environmental Health Division (286-3376) or from many hardware stores for about $10.
